I did a photo shoot of breast cancer survivors (a.k.a. Boobie Queens) at a party in their honor. The party took place at Le Chat Noir–a little nightclub in downtown Augusta. I took portraits against the brick wall–some with their Boobie Crowns and some without. We all had a great time celebrating our victory over breast cancer. We are all sisters in pink.
Sunflowers and Fruit Still Lifes
I took some Still Lifes of beautiful sunflowers, corn, and fruit in September 2021. I took these against a white background and used a texture.
Warrior
I decided to be brave and take self-portraits without my chemotherapy wig. As most everyone knows I had breast cancer (I say had because I was assured that it was taken out with surgery) but to make sure it is eradicated, I have had to undergo chemotherapy, which caused me to lose my hair. I have a beautiful wig but I just wanted everyone to know that I am a fighter. This is the reason I chose the warrior photo as the featured image. Me with my fists up. So, this is me in all my glory.
Portrait Session with Gerry
I asked a friend on mine, Gerry, to come over for a portrait session. He was at my house recently, helping me with a project, when I noticed that he had recently grown a beard. I thought the beard was very becoming and it made him look distinguished. Not everyone can rock a beard but his looked especially good. So, he agreed to pose for me. I edited some in color and some others in black and white–some of the same picture sometimes.
Joyce and Family
I was asked to do some family portraits of my friend Joyce, her daughter Amanda, and her granddaughter Lainey. I started out with Lainey who wears glasses. She allowed me to shoot some without her glasses but we ultimately decided she would be more comfortable with her glasses on, since that is how she is used to seeing herself. Joyce was a great model and basically posed as I instructed her. I added in some flowers she picked from her yard. She loosened up a bit later on. I gave her a shawl that I had in my closet and it did the trick. Joyce also wore another fringed shawl bought in my favorite places for props, Goodwill. It was a fun day and hopefully they enjoyed themselves.
Shawl
I went to Goodwill, which is my go-to store for finding props for photography. Sometimes I do not find anything unless I am very specific about what I am looking for. But, the other day, I just decided to browse and get inspired in case I found a treasure–and a treasure I did find. All of a sudden I saw this lovely shawl that kind of had a Mexican-like motif. It sort of looked biblical as well. It is really beautiful and I snatched it up for a mere $2.50. So, I had an idea that I would take some self-portraits yet again (since I live alone and it sucks when you want to get images of people) and that was what I had in mind. I wanted the shawl to drape around my head and body. It’s big so I could do it. I thought of draping it around my bald head but decided to put on my wig.
Chemotherapy – Marilyn with Wig 4/21
I am about to embark on a new journey, namely chemotherapy. I found out I had breast cancer yet again (first time was 34 years ago, when I was still young). This is not a recurrence, it is a new and improved cancer. It actually was about 3 tumors (and don’t ask me how the hell that happened) but that’s what did. I had two surgeries – one just a lumpectomy, and when the pathology report came in, the doctor told me, although the ca was only stage 1 (it had not spread) it was a very aggressive cancer (of course, only the best for me). So, I had to do something I never wanted to do–I had a mastectomy (boo-hoo). Now I am having chemo too on Tuesday. In trying to be proactive, I bought a wig and here are a couple of self-portraits of me wearing it. I had it over my hair. I decided to document this.
Elaine – Portraits March 2021
I put out feelers on Facebook and word of mouth that I really needed models for portraits. Since I live alone, the only model I have been able to consistently get is myself. I am very cooperative and know just how to pose for maximum effect, but I needed other people. So, Elaine from Chicks that Click photography club volunteered. It was a little awkward at first as she is not used to posing, but as time went on we both got into the swing of things and everything fell into place. I didn’t’t even have to tell her what to do next–she just changed her position and expression slightly and there was another shot. I had a great time that day and got some great shots of Elaine.
Becky
One thing I can say about Becky, she has a real zest for life. I advertised that I needed models and she volunteered. I’ve taken her portraits before, but this was another one. I often like to do dark, moody shots, especially of me. But I just knew that wouldn’t work for Becky. She is a happy, joyful, human being and I wanted to let her personality sparkle. I think these shots truly show the essence of her as a person. She loves to shop and there were no problems getting her to bring several cute outfits. She hardly needs any direction for posing as she is a natural. I enjoyed the afternoon with her and I hope I have captured and portrayed Becky as the happy person she is.
Self Portraits Feb 2021
I decided to do some self portraits in February 2021. These were taken in my little studio upstairs. Hopefully I will be taking some portraits of other people. I’m a very cooperative subject. The first one is very reflective of what I was going through at the time.
